What does HR actually Do?

If you have ever worked in a company, you probably found the human resources department to be the most perplexing of all the departments in that company.

The problem with the human resources (HR) department is that everyone in the company is aware of its significance.

Still, only a tiny percentage of the people who work in the company know the reasons behind its existence.

What does HR stand for? | HR

What does the abbreviation HR stand for?

It is a frequently asked question, and "HR" is an acronym or abbreviation for "Human Resources."

It is a resource for people, and it is there to provide help and is generally responsible for everything that has to do with workers associated with people.

So, what exactly does HR do now?

In the simplest terms, the HR (Human Resources) department is a group responsible for managing the employee life cycle (i.e., recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and firing employees) and administering employee benefits.

The following is a list of the activities that the human resources department is working on every day:-

1. Recruit Candidates |

When filling open roles, HR must demonstrate an understanding of the company's requirements and ensure that these requirements are satisfied.

It is not as easy as posting an advertisement on Indeed; you must research the industry, speak with relevant stakeholders, and manage the budgets.

2. Hire the Right Employees |

Then, after the vacancy has been publicised, additional research will need to be conducted to ensure that qualified applicants are recruited for the position.

Recruiting new employees is a large and expensive process, but selecting a suitable candidate may bring new life to an entire company. Choosing the incorrect candidate can throw operations into disarray.

3. Process payroll |

The term "payroll" refers to the process by which employees are paid their salaries.

Every wage period requires a certain number of calculations, for instance, salary calculation, bonuses, and deductions.

4. Conduct Disciplinary Actions |

Even though disciplinary, grievance, harassment and bullying are a few complex, employees must address problematic areas.

However, HR may get a bad rap because of this obligation. When mishandled, disciplinary proceedings can result in the loss of a valuable employee and potentially lead to legal trouble or a damaged reputation for the company. However, disciplinary action can lead to an employee's success if it is administered and carried out suitably.

For instance, if a corporation observes that a particular employee is chronically tardy and continues to be tardy even after the person has been given multiple warnings, human resources (HR) may become involved and investigate the root cause of the individual's habitual tardiness. There may be an opportunity to extend benefits to the employee, such as counselling, or to offer more resources to assist the person in learning how to be on time. Instead of taking on the expense of terminating an employee and then having to hire a replacement for them, the situation could be viewed as a learning experience that could help advance the employee's career.

5. Update Policies |

As the company evolves, the policies must be revised (or at the very least reviewed) every year.

Human Resources must ensure that all company policies are kept up to date and make suggestions for policy revisions if an existing policy is no longer beneficial to the company or its employees.

6. Maintain Employee Records |

The law requires that HR records be kept and maintained.

This includes keeping personal data such as hours worked, absences, salary details, overtime, personal information and emergency contacts, health and safety training records, tax records, retirement benefit records, maternity benefit records, annual leave records, and so on.

7. Conduct Benefit Analysis |

Maintaining a competitive advantage is vital when searching for the most qualified candidates.

Sometimes, even if a company offers a more attractive advantage, a talented potential recruit may choose to take a pay cut in order to join the company rather than join another company that offers a higher salary. This is because the potential recruit values the other benefits the company provides more.

It is best practice for HR to perform regular research on comparable businesses to see whether or not their benefits are competitive.

8. Learning & Development |

Learning and development, abbreviated as L&D, is an ongoing activity that promotes the employees of a company to further their professional growth.

It requires analysing the skill gaps in the company and establishing training programmes that equip staff with the precise knowledge and abilities necessary for better performance.

The company can accomplish this by providing opportunities for mentorships, development activities, online learning, and training courses. You can also achieve success by shaping employees' attitudes, encouraging the exchange of information, expertise, and ideas, and fostering the behaviours of those who assist employees perform better.

Whatever the company, employee learning and development is one of the most important tasks within the remit of the HR department.

When it comes to learning and development, there is no approach that can be described as "one size fits all."

So you may sometimes find that a particular staff learning and development strategy that works for some companies may not work so well for others.

The training requirements of your industry and the jobs within your company will both play a role in determining the plan that you choose to implement.
